Tomatoes ...to feed or not...

A lady mentioned the other day that she didn’t think that she needed to feed her tomatoes as they produced fruit without it in the wild. I explained to her that the ‘wild’ for tomatoes was South America and that the wild forms probably only produced small fruit.
I went on to explain that plants need nutrients, like nitrogen, from the soil to make the green pigment, chlorophyll, in the leaves which combines carbon dioxide and water to make sugars. These are then used to grow the fruit.
Her response was, ‘Well I got three tomatoes off of my plant last year without feeding it.’ Can’t win them all …
